Repair Dented Doors Sooner Than Later | Olson's Auto Body

• Mar 12, 2018

Body damage on your vehicle is a real eyesore, but many people may choose to put off repair services to save some money. But in the long run, the damage may end up costing more if you leave it be. One auto body problem that you definitely shouldn't ignore are dented car doors.

Accidents with animals, parked cars, and other vehicles on the road may lead to dented doors on a vehicle. No matter what door on your vehicle was dented, ignoring the issue may lead to bigger problems down the line. Learn about these issues and why you should trust an auto body repair shop to help reverse the damage.

1. Window Operations

After a door is dented and banged up, the window operations may be impacted on the vehicle. The impact may occur to both manual and automatic windows. At first the windows may operate normally, but you do not know what type of internal damage has occurred.

Over time, the damage may get worse. If you ignore the problem for too long, your windows may cease to operate and get stuck in either an open or closed position. If the window is stuck in an open position, your vehicle is left vulnerable to all types of weather elements and theft.

The costs to repair the window would also add to the auto body costs. Save money and hassles by repairing the dented doors before more damage occurs.

2. Water Leaks

Along with window issues, the dented door may leave your vehicle vulnerable to other types of damage. A dent may create openings or gaps in the door frame that otherwise wouldn't be there. During rainstorms, these vulnerable areas may fill with water and cause additional problems.

Not only can water leak into the vehicle, but the fluids may seep into electronic controls for the power locks and windows. The damage may make these elements inoperational or extremely faulty as you try to lock your door and secure the vehicle.

Standing water or extended water exposure may also lead to the presence of mold in the vehicle. Mold poses all types of health risks and requires a whole separate cleaning and sterilization process.

The longer you leave the dents on the door, the more problems you may come across. Repair the dents within days after the accident to help prevent water leak issues from causing even more damage.

3. Emergency Situations

Doors are meant to protect you inside the vehicle, but they also have features to help you get out in case of an emergency. A dented door may make a vehicle escape more challenging and could result in dangerous situations.

For example, during a vehicle fire or flooding situation, opening the door may be more of a challenge. If the car gets submerged in water, do not risk your chance of escape due to a dented and damaged door. Repair the doors so they open correctly and you can escape from dangerous situations on the road.

4. Door Operations
A dented door may impact the way you escape a vehicle during emergency situations, but the door may also create everyday problems when you enter or exit the vehicle. One thing to look out for is scrapping doors.

As you open the door, pay attention to see if the door scrapes up against another part of the vehicle. The damage may result in chipped paint or additional body damage. Do not make things worse on the vehicle. Focus on the repairs of the door to prevent further issues down the line.
